Maid Service

10 Things To Know Before Hiring Full Time Maids

Whether you live by yourself, with a spouse or with children, performing domestic chores such as house cleaning, cooking, washing, ironing, taking care of children and grocery shopping can be very tasking. That is why people usually hire Maid Service to help them carry out these domestic services. Employing a full time maid has numerous benefits and although this bit of luxury doesn’t come cheaply, it is usually worth the price.

A full time Maid Service can be an independent person who works for their own or they belong to an agency. Before you hire a full time maid, here are 10 things that you should know.

  1. The Employment Laws
Before you hire a full time maid, you should be aware of the employment laws. Even if you are using a Maid Service or doing it yourself, it is important that you know these laws in order to protect yourself. It is mandatory that both employers and employees have a sound and equal understanding of employment law for a safe and fair working environment. Failure to adhere to these laws can be costly to you as an employer and the offence carries expensive fines and even custodial sentence.
  2. Your responsibilities
As an employer, you will have the responsibility of ensuring that the general well-being of your employee is well catered for You should ensure that you are able to provide them with enough food, suitable accommodation and working environment as well being able to pay the salary on time.
  3. Your Budget
Before you employ someone for domestic services, you usually have a budget of what you are willing to part with whether weekly or monthly. Unlike a part time maid, a full time maid is available 24/7. Generally, the more experienced the maid is, the more expensive they will be Maids usually charge based on the number of services they are required to deliver. Look for a maid that will fit in your budget and also it is good to have a flat rate charge rather hourly which is expensive.
  4. Background and Identity verification
A full time maid is someone you will be staying with in your house and therefore checking their background information and identity is very crucial. This is someone you will be heavily relying on and therefore you need to look for that trust.

At one point you will leave them in your house and therefore it is important to employ a genuine individual with a very good background. You can use maid agencies and referrals to perform background checks. Ask for genuine identity card, passport and age.

  1. Know Your Expectations and Work Boundaries
You need to have clear expectations on what the person you are employing is coming to do and won’t be doing in your home. You can draft a chore list on what tasks you want to be performed and any other specific instructions that you might have Negotiate with your expected employee on how you expect things to be done before work begins. Ensure that you set boundaries on what you don’t expect them to do or where you don’t want them to go. Some rooms may be out of bounds for non-family members. If you don’t want your helper to use your computer, TV, telephone and other things, stress it out before they begin to work.
  2. Service proficiency
Service proficiency is one of the major things you should know about a maid before hiring them. Are they able to perform household tasks efficiently and effectively? If you want a house maid to do daily cleaning housework or cooking ensure that they can deliver all these without dragging themselves. Check if she is willing to wash and dry the clothes since some maids aren’t willing to work without washing machines.

The idea of service proficiency is just to ensure that you are hiring someone who is going to efficiently perform the tasks that they are assigned.

  1. Work Experience of The Maid
Full time maids especially the experienced ones are going to cost you a little more but it’s usually worth it The experience matters because you don’t want to employ someone who isn’t well versed with what she is tasked to perform. You don’t want to come home to find some of your kitchen ware broken, the babies aren’t properly fed or the house disorganized.

Experience becomes important especially if you have kids at home. You only want to hire someone who understands the basics of communication and behavior around your kids.

  1. Previous Illness
It is necessary for you to know what illness your expected helper has previously suffered from before you hire them. Enquire if they have any long term chronic illness because you don’t want to hire someone who isn’t medically fit to work or risks exposing you and your family to some transmissible diseases.
  2. Time Commitment
As an employer, you have a duration in which you are seeking to hire someone. Have a commitment time line for you and your expected employee.

Know that you can have a trial period for a couple of weeks that will let your maid to fully adjust to your work expectations. A trial period will help to protect you and the maid because you can easily terminate them if they don’t meet your expectations.

  1. Additional Work Perks
A full time house maid is just like any other employee and they are entitled to additional benefits. Besides giving them some days off, they are entitled to salary increment, insurance benefits, vacations, paid sick leaves among other things.

Hiring a full time maid usually comes with multiple responsibilities and high expenses though its benefits to your household can be so immense. Hiring them through an agency can sometimes be very complicated but if you put in the time and effort to look for the best helper, there will be mutual benefits between you and your domestic worker. It is important to know which questions you will ask during the interview because you want to hire a person who will help you carry out the domestic chores effectively and efficiently.

ac cleaning

Maintaining Your ac cleaning

An ac cleaning filters, coils, and fins require regular maintenance for the unit to function effectively and efficiently throughout its years of service. Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a steady decline in air conditioning performance while energy use steadily increases. C: Home Cooling for more ways to help improve your comfort and the efficiency of your air conditioner.

Air Conditioner Filters

The most important maintenance task that will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely replace or clean its filters. Clogged, dirty filters block normal airflow and reduce a system’s efficiency significantly. With normal airflow obstructed, air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil’s heat-absorbing capacity. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%.

For central air conditioners, filters are generally located somewhere along the return duct’s length. Common filter locations are in walls, ceilings, furnaces, or in the air conditioner itself. Room air conditioners have a filter mounted in the grill that faces into the room.

Some types of filters are reusable; others must be replaced. They are available in a variety of types and efficiencies. Clean or replace your air conditioning system’s filter or filters every month or two during the cooling season. Filters may need more frequent attention if the air conditioner is in constant use, is subjected to dusty conditions, or you have fur-bearing pets in the house.

Air Conditioner Coils

The air conditioner’s evaporator coil and condenser coil collect dirt over their months and years of service. A clean filter prevents the evaporator coil from soiling quickly. In time, however, the evaporator coil will still collect dirt. This dirt reduces airflow and insulates the coil, reducing its ability to absorb heat. To avoid this problem, check your evaporator coil every year and clean it as necessary.

Outdoor condenser coils can also become very dirty if the outdoor environment is dusty or if there is foliage nearby. You can easily see the condenser coil and notice if dirt is collecting on its fins.

You should minimize dirt and debris near the condenser unit. Your dryer vents, falling leaves, and lawn mower are all potential sources of dirt and debris. Cleaning the area around the coil, removing any debris, and trimming foliage back at least 2 feet (0.6 meters) allow for adequate airflow around the condenser.

Coil Fins

The aluminum fins on evaporator and condenser coils are easily bent and can block airflow through the coil. Air conditioning wholesalers sell a tool called a “fin comb” that will comb these fins back into nearly original condition.

Condensate Drains

Occasionally pass a stiff wire through the unit’s drain channels. Clogged drain channels prevent a unit from reducing humidity, and the resulting excess moisture may discolor walls or carpet.

Window Seals for Room Air Conditioners

At the start of each cooling season, inspect the seal between the air conditioner and the window frame to ensure it makes contact with the unit’s metal case. Moisture can damage this seal, allowing cool air to escape from your house.

Preparing for Winter

In the winter, either cover your room air conditioner or remove and store it. Covering the outdoor unit of a central air conditioner will protect the unit from winter weather and debris.

Hiring a Professional ac cleaning service

When your air conditioner needs more than regular maintenance, hire a professional service technician from dubai ac cleaning

. A well-trained technician will find and fix problems in your air conditioning system.

The technician should:

  • Check for correct amount of refrigerant
  • Test for refrigerant leaks using a leak detector
  • Capture any refrigerant that must be evacuated from the system, instead of illegally releasing it to the atmosphere
  • Check for and seal duct leakage in central systems
  • Measure airflow through the evaporator coil
  • Verify the correct electric control sequence and make sure that the heating system and cooling system cannot operate simultaneously
  • Inspect electric terminals, clean and tighten connections, and apply a non-conductive coating if necessary
  • Oil motors and check belts for tightness and wear
  • Check the accuracy of the thermostat.

You probably already have all of the ingredients needed to make your homemade floor cleaner. This mopping solution gets your wood, tile, laminate or vinyl just as shiny and streak-free as the commercial stuff without introducing irritants to your home.

That’s one of the great things about making natural homemade cleaners: you don’t need a lot of different products that only clean one kind of surface. So, once you’ve got your standard cleaning ingredients on hand, it’s easy to mix up a variety of homemade cleaning products.

Safer for Indoor Air-Quality
Commercial cleaning products contribute significantly to indoor air pollution. For people with allergies or asthma, indoor air quality is critical to good health.

Companies that manufacture cleaning products aren’t required to disclose their ingredients on the label. As a result, there’s no way to tell at a glance whether a product contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may cause irritation or even cancer.

Switching to homemade natural cleaners lets you know exactly what you’re using in your home, so you can avoid dangerous combinations of cleaning ingredients that can harm your family’s health.

Easier on Your Budget
If that’s not enough to convince you to switch to a homemade floor cleaner, consider how much money you’ll save. The cost of commercial floor cleaners is crazy!

Using a Swiffer mop, for instance, runs about $0.32 per wet pad — and you have to use two or three of them in even a small kitchen or bathroom. Even bottles of commercial mopping products run anywhere from $4 to $15, depending on the brand.

Over time, those expenses add up. Cleaning shouldn’t cost a fortune, and it doesn’t when you use this homemade mopping solution.

This homemade mopping solution cleans any kind of hard flooring.

✓ It works on laminate.
✓ It works on hardwood.
✓ It works on vinyl, linoleum, and tile.
✓ Yep, you can use it on marble or granite.
✓ It even works on cement!

Have I mentioned that, after powering through grime, it also leaves a gorgeous shine?

It Works With Mopping Robots, Too!
I’ve written before about my search to find the best floor cleaning robots. One of my requirements was being able to use a homemade floor cleaner.

After spending that kind of money on a mopping robot, I didn’t want to be stuck buying a special floor cleaning solution or wet mopping pads all the time.

I’ve been using it in my mopping robot for over two years now, and I’m thrilled with the results.

HOMEMADE floor cleaning services RECIPE
Homemade Floor Cleaner Recipe
Inexpensive but powerful mopping solution that cleans all types of hard floors. Works on wood, tile, laminate, vinyl, even marble, and stone.
Print Recipe
US Customary – Metric
2 cups warm water
1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
1/4 cup isopropyl (70%) rubbing alcohol
1/8 tsp liquid dish soap (See notes)
5-10 drops essential oils optional
Add all of the ingredients above and gently swirl to mix. Lightly spray 3-foot sections then wipe with a mop. This is best for small areas or touch-up mopping.
Scale the recipe depending on the size of your bucket. A 1-gallon bucket holds 128 ounces (US) to 160 ounces (UK). Use the “Serving Size” slider to select your needed amount. You may need to scale more than once to select your desired amount.
You do not need to rinse after use.
Allow the floors to completely dry before walking on them.
Store unused homemade floor cleaning service in a cool, dark spot. Use within 1 month.
Do not use a liquid dish detergent that contains moisturizing, anti-bacterial, or oxygenated bleach ingredients. Also, do not swap Castile soap for the dish detergent since it is an oil-based soap and will leave streaks.
What the Ingredients Do
Water: Loosens grime and acts helps the other ingredients combine.
White vinegar: Degreases and provides mild disinfection. At this dilution, it’s safe for natural stone surfaces because it’s not acidic enough to cause etching. I’ve been using this on marble and granite for years without a problem. If you have any concerns, don’t use it.
Isopropyl (70%) rubbing alcohol: Speeds up evaporation to avoid streaks. Degreases and helps disinfect. (In the UK, if you can’t find it inexpensively at the chemist it’s available online.)
Liquid dish soap: Dissolves bonds between dirt and floor, degreases and cleans. Don’t use a dish soap that contains moisturizers, antibacterial ingredients, or “oxygen bleach.” I use Dawn Original (Classic). (Fairy is the UK substitute.) Please don’t swap Castille soap for the dish soap. Castille is an oil-based soap and will leave streaks and smears.
Essential oils: Optional ingredient to offset the smell of vinegar and rubbing alcohol. If you have pets or children, verify the safety of any essential oil you use. Be sure they aren’t compounds (i.e., those with fragrance added to grapeseed or some other form of oil). I buy these from Amazon.
Remember, there are reasons for using the specific ingredients in this homemade cleaning recipe. If you change them, you’re changing the formula, and that may alter your results.

Cleaning product sales set to continue to rise in 2019

cleaning products , A new craze has taken over the internet and it even involves filming your toilet.

Cleaning has become one of the biggest social media trends of 2018, where platforms such as Instagram are now awash with hashtags like

Influencers like Mrs Hinch, who to date has 1.4 million Instagram followers, have somehow managed to glamorise typically mundane tasks.

And as they continue to post cleaning demonstrations using their favorite cleaning products and tools, retailers have noticed a dramatic increase in cleaning product sales across the UK.

Lorna McDonald, store manager of B&M on Bangor’s Main Street, told BBC News NI: “We’ve noticed there are a lot of younger people coming in and buying cleaning products, but there has been a rise in general in recent months.

“If you’ve got a following like Mrs Hinch on Instagram, we have to be prepared and have the products that are recommended if we want to increase our sales, especially as the high street is a bit dead at the moment.”

Minky, an online company that produces cleaning equipment noticed a sharp rise in sales after Mrs Hinch endorsed one of their products in unpaid Instagram posts.

They told BBC News NI: “We’ve seen a 10,000% increase in demand from consumers since the end of June this year and an exponential increase in demand from retailers, with no signs of slowing.

“In fact, demand has been so high that stock is selling out as quickly as it goes on sale.”

Easho, a wholesale website for household products who are in paid partnership with Mrs Hinch, says that the cleaning craze has helped their sales.

“We are now seeing the equivalent of ‘The Delia Effect’ on cleaning products, with growth of up to 200% on some of the most recommended items,” said a spokesperson.

As well as internet retailers, high street shops have also noticed a higher footfall of customers with cleaning products in their baskets.

‘Tidy home, tidy mind’

Katie Colwell, from Donaghadee in County Down, says cleaning has become “one of my friend group’s most common topics of conversation”.

And it’s all because of social media.

The 27-year-old nurse told BBC News NI: “Embarrassingly, I spend hours watching social media influencers cleaning.

“Among my friends, we talk about which products we have all tried and whether we rate them or not and what tips we have picked up from different social media influencers.

“I am guilty of running to the nearest pound shop to grab the products which I have seen on Instagram to try myself, which has meant I now have enough disinfectant to mop eight football pitches and have them smelling of fresh linen or cranberry and orange.”

But Miss Colwell says her fiancée isn’t convinced by the new hobby.

“He thinks I’m bonkers when I come home, excited to try out my newest cloth or cleaning product, and spend hours cleaning on my days off, but I find it therapeutic and a good way to de-stress,” she said.

“A tidy home is a tidy mind.”

Richard Hopping, an analyst for market research agency Mintel, told BBC News NI: “Our data shows that 39% of cleaners feel stressed when their homes aren’t clean, so promoting the benefits to mental wellbeing through cleaning could be a real factor in why influencers and cleaning are proving so popular.”

@thesecretcleaner is an anonymous Instagram account who posts regular cleaning tips and has nearly 10,000 followers.

They believe that for many people the online cleaning world provides a “virtual community” for people who may feel isolated.

“When I started the account, I wasn’t working and I found that cleaning kept me sane, kept me going.

“For me, cleaning is a type of mindfulness. You’re focussing on one thing, you’re in the moment and you feel like you have achieved something.

“You have people who support you and don’t think you’re weird for posting videos of you cleaning! It’s a hobby!”

But like many things on social media, trends tend to come and go, and some predict the cleaning phenomenon may not stand the test of time.

Niamh Taylor, director of Northern Ireland digital marketing agency Digital 24, said: “Some people have a problem with the amount of chemicals and plastic used to keep people’s home squeaky clean.

“Others just do not get why you’d want to watch someone polishing their sink and putting clothes away every night.”

She added: “I don’t think this phenomenon will be as popular throughout 2019 as realistically, Insta-trends are short lived and cleaning is just not ‘Instagrammable’.”

kitchen cleaning , Looking to attract new tenants to your rental property? Then it’s crucial that your kitchen is at its best. Here, we start with a step-by-step guide to helping you clean the extractor fan in your kitchen.

We’ve put together a series of DIY videos with Harriet, Simply Business customer and owner of Calm Oasis Cleaners, to help your rental property sparkle for its next viewing. Today, let’s get going with the kitchen cleaning service

A clean extractor fan filter is a must for any prospective tenant

Extractor fan filters can often be neglected by those living in rental properties, meaning that having to deal with accumulated grime when they move out is a common problem.

With the filters often out of view it can be a question of out of sight, out of mind for some, but canny prospective tenants will be put off if the filter hasn’t been dealt with properly.

With the right combination of cleaning fluids, patience, and smart scrubbing methods, you can get your filter gleaming like new again. Harriet’s step by step video guide will take you through the process.Play the video

Tools for cleaning an extractor fan filter

  • Dish soap for mixing into very hot water to create the main cleaning fluid for the filter
  • White distilled vinegar to add to the dish soap and water mixture, for extra cleaning power
  • Baking soda to sprinkle on the filter once it’s had its initial water-based cleaning session
  • A scrubbing sponge to apply the baking soda deeper into the filter – you can use a soft metal sponge or softer materials if the filter is delicate
  • A toothbrush for cleaning out dirt in hard-to-reach areas of the filter

How to clean an extractor fan filter

Cleaning a filter takes a bit of time, but if you follow the correct steps it’s an easy process to complete. You’ll need to remove the filter from the main component, and soak it in a mixture of water, soap, and vinegar. Then work in some baking soda. Clean out any remaining dirt with a toothbrush and leave the filter to dry. Once it’s dry, put it back into the fan.

  1. Remove extractor fan filter from the main fan component
  2. Place the filter in a sink filled with very hot water, dish soap and a cup of white distilled vinegar
  3. Leave the filter soaking in the mixture for as long as possible – at least 30 minutes
  4. Remove the filter from the water-based mixture and sprinkle baking soda on it
  5. Use the scrubbing sponge to work the baking soda around the filter, into its nooks and crannies until most of the grime is all removed
  6. Clean out any remaining dirt with a toothbrush – useful for awkward corners
  7. Leave the filter to dry
  8. Once it’s completely dry, place the filter back in the extractor fan

How to clean a cooker hood with a carbon filter

Does your cooker hood or extractor fan have a carbon filter? This type of filter is difficult to clean at home, so you’re likely to be better off replacing them at regular intervals.

You can buy replacement cooker hood carbon filters from most DIY shops. It’s recommended that you change the filter about once every six months.

How to keep grease off your extractor fan

Cleaning your extractor fan or cooker hood regularly is a necessity, but in order to make the job easier and to ensure that the fan works as it should, you should take preventative measures too. Try to encourage your tenants to wipe down the fan every time they use the hob, reminding them to wait until all the surfaces are cool. The filter should also be tended to regularly, outside of the deep clean outlined above. And remember – grease in the extractor fan is mainly accumulated through frying!

Get your whole kitchen ready for new tenants

carpet cleaning

Big Carpet’ Is Betting This New Floor Covering Will Get Americans to End Their Love of Hardwood

carpet cleaning , After presiding over 18 months of research and development, Keith Weinberger says he’s finally found the “generational change” needed to revive an industry two decades past its peak. “This will blow your mind,” he says. Weinberger is pitching a product called HOME Fresh that he says acts like a giant air filter. It’s 100% hypo-allergenic, stain-resistant and recyclable.

It’s also carpet.

The chief executive officer of Empire Today, one of America’s biggest carpet sellers, is abundantly aware that what he’s saying is hard to process. “I get it, me talking about new and exciting carpet is almost unbelievable,” he says. “It’s not credible, right?”

After dominating for decades, wall-to-wall carpet’s share of the floor-covering market has plummeted since the millennium—from about 60% of sales to roughly one third, according to Catalina Research. Blame Americans’ ardor for hardwood and tile—and the perception that carpet is so 1970s, ’80s or ’90s—pick your decade. Bedrooms still have lots of it, but carpet is disappearing from the center of the home—living, dining and family rooms.

“I get it, me talking about new and exciting carpet is almost unbelievable.”

“The negative image of carpet is because once upon a time carpet was used everywhere,” says Tyler Wisler, an interior decorator and television personality who appeared in HGTV’s “Design Star.” Wisler actually loves carpet— “it can be amazing”—but rarely recommends it because clients—Gen Xers especially—practically equate the product with a painful childhood memory. “A lot of people are like ‘why did you do that?”’

Design trends come and go, of course, but carpet is also perceived as hard to clean—“stain” pops up when you Google the stuff—and a magnet for allergens that can cause respiratory ailments. “At the end of the day,” says Aaron Pirner, who runs CAP Carpet Inc., a regional chain of floor-covering stores based in Wichita, Kansas, “they just don’t like the product.”

Weinberger, who came up at Procter & Gamble Co. before joining Empire in 2012 and rising to CEO two years later, is betting on research showing that people like the idea of carpet, especially its softness. From his days working on P&G brands like Tide, Weinberger learned to harness consumer insights to jump-start development of new features. The research was clear: Carpet was seen as harder to clean, which is a problem for people with messy kids and pets. That led to HOME Fresh, which appeared last year. In ads, Empire calls it the “carpet of the future” and explains: “If you or anyone in your family has asthma, allergies or you just want a cleaner home, chances are you think carpet is bad news—not anymore.”

If HOME Fresh catches on—the company says it’s already a top seller—the product could transform not just carpet’s reputation but Empire Today’s image as well. Founded 60 years ago in Chicago and now owned by the private-equity firm H.I.G. Capital, the company will be familiar to millions of America thanks to TV commercials that end with the jingle: “Eight hundred, five-eight-eight, two-three-hundred, Empirrrrre.” Weinberger, 47, sees HOME Fresh as an opportunity to transcend “the brand that has the commercials with the phone number.”

‘70s Shag to Imitation Wood

Carpet appeared in the early 19th century but really took off during the post-war, suburban building boom. Americans constructed bigger homes—hello McMansions—and filled them with carpet, which was affordable thanks to factory automation. “W2W carpet” became a coveted bullet point in real estate listings. Lower production costs also helped the industry stave off globalization-fueled job losses and factory closures—a rare success story in U.S. textiles. While the industry has shrunk considerably, North Georgia is home to a number factories churning out the stuff.

Carpet has morphed over the years, from the yellow ’70s shag to the beige and taupe of the ’90s. It also became boring and ever-present—filling offices, hotels and airports—and often stood out only when stained. As with many products with enduring popularity, consumers eventually moved on. In the past decade, inflation-adjusted sales of wall-to-wall carpet sank $5 billion, according to Floor Covering News. In response, flooring companies created imitation wood and tile that cost a lot less. At first, these new “hard surfaces” looked fake, but now a category called luxury vinyl is almost indistinguishable from the real thing, mimicking the ridges and imperfections of tile and wood. It’s also really easy to clean.

The now-ubiquitous open floor plan accelerated carpet’s tumble. Homeowners came to expect a continuous surface flowing from family room to kitchen. The focus on the center of the home in countless HGTV shows gave the impression that Americans remodeled with nothing but granite, stainless steel and hard-surface floors. Farmhouse chic—popularized by HGTV star Joanna Gaines—uses lots of wood, even on the ceiling. Carpet is often mentioned on Zillow only if ripping it out will reveal hardwood.

Secret Odor-Neutralizing Mineral

Now, Empire Today hopes to innovate its way back into consumers’ good graces. Most carpet has three layers: fuzzy fibers on top, a backing made of crushed limestone and a foam pad on the bottom. HOME Fresh is one piece, made from recycled plastic that’s been re-purposed into polyester yarn. That means it’s hard to stain and doesn’t absorb moisture, helping prevent mold and mildew. Its thinness also makes it more breathable, so a vacuum sucks up more pet dander and dirt than from traditional carpet. Empire’s 1,100 salespeople, who make about half a million home visits a year, also tout a secret infused mineral that the company claims helps neutralize odors.

Empire is one of several companies trying to revive carpet. Mohawk Industries, which partnered with Empire on HOME Fresh, is also pitching “permanent stain resistance” and “sustainable softness.” Engineered Floors promises color that never fades. Carpet cut into tiles from the likes of Shaw Industries Group—owned by Berkshire Hathaway—and Interface makes carpet modular, portable and easy to install, like a rug. Shaw’s LifeGuard, a waterproof carpet backing that stops spills from spreading to padding and the sub-floor, won a 2019 Edison award in the home-solutions category. It was originally created for nursing homes.

“It’s one of our most successful launches,” says Tim Baucom, president of Shaw, who’s been at the company for a quarter century. He maintains that carpet can “absolutely” be saved.

For those who doubt that any of this will work, Tom Lape, president of Mohawk, points to Tempur-Pedic and how its foam mattress supplanted springs and ignited growth in a very mature industry. “Let’s face it, we’ve got to excite consumers,” he says. “If it can be done, by gosh, in the bedding industry, we can.”

The high end of any market is often a leading indicator for the masses and there are signs of life there. Wealthy homeowners have been buying handmade rugs in increasingly large sizes. They’re getting bolder in their color choices and patterns, especially on stairs. After a trend toward abstract “Jackson Pollock looks,” there’s a recent shift toward structured designs and warm colors, like reds and oranges, says Chad Stark, a third-generation executive at carpet emporium Stark.

At ABC carpet cleaning service & Home, a New York chain founded in 1897, customers are spending $20,000 on living room rugs made from natural fibers like wool and silk and reconsidering installed carpet. “There is a resurgence,” says Bill Ward, ABC’s vice president of carpet. “I can see wall-to-wall coming back.”

Empire says customers who call in looking for hard surfaces are getting past their carpet hangups. “There are some who get it and buy it,” Weinberger says. “But even if they don’t, it gives us a chance to at least have a better conversation about carpet.”

6 Tips for Successful Spring Cleaning

The flowers are blooming, the birds are serenading, and our house still feels like it’s stuck with winter blues. Spring cleaning service is a tradition that allows us to freshen up our homes and get a head start on the hectic seasons of spring and summer.

Clean Room-By-Room
Approaching your house room-by-room is the most effective way to deep-clean your home at any time of the year, but especially in spring. Use room checklists as a springboard for deep-cleaning the areas of your home that really need extra attention. Feel free to skip items that have recently been cleaned and focus on the parts of your home that have been neglected all winter long.

Organize and Clear the Clutter
One of the biggest parts of spring cleaning is getting rid of clutter that you don’t need. Now is a good time to advantage of the natural spring urge to get rid of items that are weighing you down and begin fresh with a more streamlined lifestyle. A systematic four-step approach to identifying problems, analyzing reasons, determining solutions, and implementing remedies can be extremely productive at this time of year. Sorting your belongings into four categories—trash, give-away, store, or put-way—can also be effective as you begin the spring-cleaning process.

Now is a great time to plan a garage sale or to donate items to good causes. Cleaning will be a lot easier when the clutter is gone.

Get the Family Involved
If you need a little help in your cleaning endeavors, get your family involved. Even the most unwilling helper can make a big difference in the workload. Don’t worry: There are ways to deal with even the most reluctant helpers. This is actually a great time of year to get the entire family to work together. Try throwing on some music or establishing a family reward as an incentive to get the work done.

Tackle the Seasonal Chores
There are some special chores that need to be done seasonally. We ignore them for most of the fall and winter, but now it is time to bite the bullet and get these things clean. Even though these chores only need to be done once or twice a year, they will help your home run look better and run smoothly. Outdoor chores like cleaning grills, patios, and windows can be a little intimidating, but there are some simple tricks that can keep the jobs manageable.

Keep Cleaning Products to a Minimum
The cleaning aisles of our stores are stocked full of commercial products to help you clean, but the variety can be overwhelming. And dozens of cleaning products means dozens of cleaning products to clutter up your cabinets and closets.

Resist the temptation to buy all these cleaning supplies; the real champions of spring cleaning are more basic supplies, such as a good all-purpose cleaner and microfiber cloths. There are even homemade cleaners you can make that will save you money while protecting the environment.

Establish New Cleaning Habits
A good, thorough spring cleaning that includes the whole house is a great time to establish new on-going cleaning habits, and it can also make the next spring cleaning a good deal easier. Simple 15-minute cleanup routines practiced every few days, each including a series of 1- to 2-minute chores, can make it remarkably easy to keep your home clean and tidy all year long.
